Elyria Awarded $ 900,000 to Replace Lead Service Lines in 225 Homes | Lorain County
the city of Elyria will receive $ 922,062 loan principal relief Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for the replacement of lead service lines (LSL) at more than 225 Elyria homes, according to a press release, with the project scheduled to begin this month.
About 6.1 million households across the country receive drinking water through lead service lines (pipes). The Ohio EPA Drinking Water Assistance Fund (DWAF) program directly addresses concerns about lead in drinking water through a grant-type loan forgiveness. Projects must show readiness to move forward, have information on LSL locations, and demonstrate the authority to deal with lead lines on private property.
“A lot of time and effort went into developing this project and securing these dollars, including the work of myself, Mayor Whitfield and Manager Brubaker, of the distribution department of the city. ‘Water, General Counsel Amanda Deery, and Chief Financial Officer Ted Pileski, ”said Director Samuel F. Jacob in a press release.
The water pumping service, under the direction of Jacob, developed an app for the project in September. Elyria was one of the first communities to submit a proposal in 2020 and learned of the award on February 26.
“We are delighted with the ministry’s work in prioritizing this project and collaborating on a proposal to secure funding. Said Mayor Frank Whitfield. “Knowing that more than 225 households in Elyria will no longer have to worry about the quality of their drinking water and their potential lead, at what will be, really, no final cost for the city or the taxpayers, it is A blessing ! “
City officials said $ 20 million in principal loan forgiveness was available in the 2021 and 2022 program years; applicants can receive up to $ 1 million per year.
The city of Elyria plans to apply for additional funding for projects in calendar year 2022.
