Exclusive Westside Country Club Receives Multi-Million Dollar PPP Loan While Collecting Full Dues
Paycheck Protection Program Loan $ 2.5 Million – $ 5 Million Goes To Riviera Country Club

An exclusive Pacific Palisades country club – which includes the US Secretary of the Treasury among its famous members – received a multi-million dollar small business loan from the federal government as it reportedly laid off employees and still collected 100% of the money. membership dues despite being closed due to COVID-19[FEMININE
I knew it was just an excuse. I knew the second we come back we will see the employees leave. The fact that they had access to this PPP loan does not surprise me. The fact that they were able to get it is a bigger surprise to me.
According to one member, most Riviera Country Club members felt the club would not apply for a PPP loan, claiming that several employees had verbally stated that the club would not be getting a loan. In addition, a member told the Santa Monica mirror that in early April, some members received an email saying they were paying full dues in order to keep employees on the payroll. However, one member said that does not appear to be the case.
“It’s the principle that is the problem,” said the MP. “I care that they charge us full dues and this activity fee and they promise that they are not going to lay off our employees and we are recovering and half of the employees that I don’t see anymore. So where are these guys? “
When asked what the club’s response should be, members responded that the club would have to prove that they really needed it for the reasons the PPP was created, which was primarily aimed at employees so that they don’t lose their jobs and so businesses can continue once they reopen.
“I’m not sitting here as a judge or jury here, they just have to follow whatever the requirements of the PPP loan are. If they qualify, they qualify, but they have to prove their financial data. The problem with a private club is that they can do it all in a black box. Nobody knows what they are doing, ”said a member.
The Santa Monica mirror has contacted Riviera Country Club on several occasions with questions and comments, but has not received a response at time of posting. The Bel-Air Bay Club also did not respond to a request for comment.
Members acknowledged that although the club was closed to maintain the grass on the golf course, Riviera likely had little tennis overhead.
“Tennis courts are literally maintenance free. Every few years, they have to resurface them. So when they shut down for the pandemic, they literally took the water fountains off the courts so they didn’t, I think, have the electricity on, ”one member said. “So on the tennis side, while their income may have gone down and they are paying the salaries of the employees, they also didn’t have any additional overhead costs to cover.”
While Riviera was the only country club in Los Angeles to receive a loan, several other golf and tennis clubs outside the city of Southern California were approved for PPP loans. With the exception of La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Toscana Country Club and Claremont Tennis Club, none of the other clubs have received loans of more than $ 1,000,000. Other loan recipients, as detailed in the table below, include the Palm Springs Tennis Club, the Chevy Chase Country Club in Glendale, and the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

Riviera Country Club and Mnuchin have both made headlines in local newspapers in recent months. In May, Côte d’Azur has been closed by the Los Angeles City Attorney for opening in violation of stay-at-home orders. Also in May, Mnuchin made headlines when the Brentwood School – where Mnuchin’s children reportedly attended –received then repaid a PPP loan.
